Competency 5: Advance Human Rights & Justice

Social workers understand the environmental, economic, organizational, racial, cultural, social, and historic influences on social policy. Social workers identify social policy at all government levels that affects well-being, human rights and justice, service delivery, and access to social services. Social workers use their knowledge of influential factors on social policy and the impacts of social policy on human rights to critique, engage in, and advocate for anti-racist and anti-oppressive policies to create effective change. Social workers understand that micro and mezzo social work informs policy formulation, analysis, implementation, and evaluation.

Demonstrated Skills & Project Examples

Community Needs Assessment

Developed a comprehensive community assessment for a local non-profit, identifying key gaps in housing and mental health services for transition-age youth.

Program Evaluation Framework

Designed a quantitative evaluation tool to measure the effectiveness of de-escalation training for residential technicians.

Key Learnings & Professional Impact

The integration of Competency 5 into my professional practice has been transformative. By systematically evaluating client outcomes against research-validated benchmarks, I have cultivated a more rigorous methodology for de-escalation and advocacy. This synthesis of theory and practice ensures that every intervention serves as a bridge toward systemic equity.

The impact of this work is most evident in the documentation of family reunification successes and the strategic utilization of lived experiences to inform policy dialogues. Transitioning from reactive problem-solving to proactive, research-informed advocacy allows for a more sustainable impact on the communities I serve.

Reflection Note: The continuous evaluation of practice interventions serves as the foundation for ethical professional growth and informed thought leadership in the social work sector.
